Microsoft's gaming arm is stepping beyond the console. Xbox has officially announced a new structure called XP that will carry its game universes into film, television and even theme parks. The name nods to the "Experience Points" players have been racking up for years.
At the helm is Kayleen Walters, who previously served as general manager at Mojang, the studio behind Minecraft.
Expansion across four pillars
The first stop under XP is Xbox Pictures. This team will adapt stories and characters from the games into film and TV projects, reaching new audiences.
Xbox Products will create licensed and original merchandise for the franchises, while Xbox Places will bring communities together in person through live events, theme park experiences and broadcasts.
The collaborations arm: Partnerships
The fourth unit is Xbox Partnerships. Its mission: working with content creators and various brands to build new experiences and brand partnerships.
With this structure, top-tier series like Call of Duty, Fallout and Halo will no longer live solely on console or PC. Which projects move forward will be revealed in due course.
