On the Italian island of Sardinia, hidden in the mountains, lies a settlement of roughly 2,266 people: Bolotana. Nobody here rushes; most journeys are made on foot, meals are shared with family, and traditional recipes live on in the kitchen. What truly raises eyebrows, though, is the villagers' longevity data.

According to a study published in Frontiers in Aging, 13.83% of women in the village who reach the age of 70 go on to hit 100. The national average lags far behind at 3.54%. That figure places Bolotana second in the world for women, behind only Hong Kong.

At 70, plenty of years still ahead

The same research shows that a 70-year-old woman in the village has an average life expectancy of 20.85 more years. At that age, life is less a finish line than the start of a new chapter.

During the study period, six villagers had passed 100 — all of them women, the oldest aged 102.

The map points to a blue zone candidate

What makes Sardinia special in longevity literature is that in parts of the island people live longer than average and centenarians are unusually common. Such regions are called "blue zones." Bolotana is being studied for its potential to join that list; the standout factor is the markedly long lives of its women.

Hillside walks instead of the gym

The town has not a single gym. Instead, women climb steep slopes; these walks can add up to 20 kilometers a day.

And there's no diet restriction at the kitchen door: the cheese pastry dessert seada and spicy mustazzolus biscuits are never missing from the table.

No aging alone

Another key factor is the family fabric. The village elderly are never left alone; they stay at the center of family life, tending to household chores and the kitchen.

101-year-old Giovanna Marras is a typical example. She still cooks, hosts guests in her home, and spends time with her family.

No single factor can explain this longevity, of course. But the combination of daily movement, traditional cuisine and tight family bonds in one village is what makes Bolotana a phenomenon that has caught researchers' attention.
