One of the first commercially available pieces of the Android XR ecosystem is getting ready for sale. Xreal Aura, developed for the Android XR platform Google and Samsung are working on, has opened for reservations in four markets: the United States, Canada, Japan and South Korea. With the process starting in June, the official price tag has also been revealed.
The product stands apart from a typical VR headset. Xreal describes the Aura as a "spatial computing glasses"; the processor and power source sit not in the frame but in a separate unit.
Ordinary glasses look, lightweight device
From the outside, the frame is indistinguishable from a classic pair of sunglasses. It weighs under 95 grams; the secret to that lightness is moving the components outside the glasses.
The phone-sized extra unit reportedly houses both the processor and the 4,455 mAh battery. The unit also handles touch controls and fingerprint authentication. The brain is the Qualcomm Snapdragon Reality Elite chip, with the Google Gemini assistant embedded in the device.
Micro-OLED panels, adjustable transparency
On the display side, an optical see-through (OST) design offering a 70-degree field of view takes center stage. Sony-sourced Micro-OLED panels promise 1920 x 1200 resolution and a 120 Hz refresh rate.
Thanks to electrochromic dimming, how transparent the lenses stay is left to the user; the balance between the outside world and digital content can be adjusted on the fly.
On the audio side, Bose's technology is in play.
$199 deposit, full price varies by capacity
A $199 upfront payment is required for reservation. Memory and storage capacity determine the price:
- 12 GB RAM + 256 GB storage: $1,279
- 16 GB RAM + 512 GB storage: $1,499
- Size: Medium and large; both options are offered at the same price.
