What happens when your foot catches the charging cable? The computer slides off the desk and crashes to the floor. A few seconds of carelessness can become the worst disaster to befall an expensive device.

Apple has solved this problem for years with MagSafe. Microsoft is now bringing the same logic to Type-C. The new Surface Laptop Ultra locks the charging cable magnetically to the port. When the cable is tugged, the connection releases on its own; the device isn't dragged along with the cord.

The port stays Type-C

The system is called Magnetic Connect. The key difference: the laptop's port isn't a proprietary connector but standard Type-C. If the magnetic cable isn't with you, regular Type-C adapters, external displays and other accessories plug into the same port. In other words, magnetism has been added without sacrificing versatility.

The 140W charger's cable also sits comfortably in the port thanks to the magnet.

One catch

The magnetic cable's tip is thicker than standard Type-C connectors. So you can't magnetically charge a phone or another Type-C device with this cable. It works only with the Surface Laptop Ultra.

Microsoft's formula is clear: offer magnetic safety while preserving Type-C's flexibility. The price is a proprietary, thicker cable.
